Existing partitons not recognized during installation

http://askubuntu.com – I've got a Windows 8 (final version, no preview) installed in my pc. Now I wanted to install Ubuntu like I've done a thousand times before. Strange thing is, gparted (started from live USB-Stick) sees my system disk as completely unallocated although it has one huge ntfs partition with Windows 8 on it. So I booted into Windows again and used the disk management tool to shrink that partition and create a new one in the free space. I formated that one to fat32. I still got the same behavior in gparted. Does anyone have an idea? My harddisk is a Samsung 830 Series SSD and the mainboard has UEFI. (HowTos)

I never had problem when using XP, what I usually did was: 1) Install XP first, leaving during the disk partitioning an unallocated space for the linux installation

I have a partition that I resized using gparted from my ubuntu and after that I installed windows 7 on that.

partition 1: ubuntu partition 2: windows partition 3: unallocated

I recently encountered an hd0 out of disk error and wasn't able to boot Ubuntu.

I tried to install Fedora 17 on the same disk I have Windows 7. First I got the message, that there are no free space to create partition, even in Windows part of disk was marked as unallocated. I spent two days to get to know that there's something like dynamic disc. OK. I converted it to basic one using EaseUs tool, which took about 20 hours. Ok, no problem.

I run Lubuntu but wanted to install Windows. So I used GParted Live CD to shrink the Linux partition and create a new Windows partition. Then I installed Windows on that partition fine and it boots.

I am attempting, for possibly the hundredth time, to install a variant of linux (Ubuntu) onto my computer (Compaq Presario C57) and I'm having a lot of difficulty.

First thing I did was shrink my windows partition to free up some space, which now appears as 'Unallocated Space' with a black stripe across it in Disk Management.
