Emacs as Root

http://crunchbanglinux.org – Running 'sudo emacs -nw ....' works, but does not give me any of the customizations in my ~/.emacs file. This is because emacs is looking in /home/root/.emacs? I created a soft link from my ~/.emacs to the root's home, but then emacs was not happy about other code it required in ~/.emacs.d/. I'm sure I didn't need to do all this on Ubuntu (I'm not "complaining" about #! and being an Ubuntu fan-boy, I'm just making the comparison) -- so there must be a way around this? (HowTos)
