Luna is a bold attempt to revamp and completely retool Jupiter, the distribution’s first edition. I got a first look at what Luna will bring to the table with the latest stable edition of Pear Linux, whose shell, Pear Shell, is based on Pantheon, the desktop environment and shell of Elementary OS. From what I have so far observed about Elementary OS Luna, it is built atop Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, on Linux kernel 3.2. Elementary OS Luna beta 1 is a Linux distribution I previewed just a few days ago. See Elementary OS Luna preview. It is a revamped desktop distribution based on Ubuntu Desktop.

Well, the Elementary devs are not going to release their own Luna in the foreseeable future--they are saying that their distro is not like any other and it must be without bugs to come out.

They even said, if I move Luna Beta 1 to Quantal and/or Raring, I would get updates etc.

So, I took the challenge and build "their" Luna with Quantal mini.iso and with their Quantal applications.

Elementary OS is a fast and beautiful distro that focuses on simplicity and minimalism.

I've been using Luna daily build for sometime, so I knew what to expect, when Beta 1 was released, except the beautiful greeter and the default wallpaper.

Once, I downloaded and installed the Luna Beta 1, I did my usual thing--upgraded it to Raring direct from Precise, by passing the transit Quantal.

I installed Calibre, so I could read a book, while Apt did its work.

Why: Speed and ease of use. I have an old HP Pavilion DV600 computer, with 1GB RAM and 100 MB HD. It's not my primary computer, just something to mess around with. In the past I found Xubuntu to be a good compromise of speed, ease of use and availability of apps. When Elementary OS Luna Beta came out, I tried that and liked the look.
