I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 (or 12.10) with Windows 8 on a new Sony Vaio, but have run into some problems :)
Specifically, my problems seem to come from choosing UEFI or Legacy as the Bootmode in the BIOS.
Here is what I have found so far:
Windows 8 needs to boot using UEFI, and doesn't work in Legacy mode
Ubuntu (both 12.04 and 12.10) needs to boot using Legacy, and won't boot (at l
Hey Guys! So, I just recently got a new laptop a few days ago and it came with Windows 8 (Inspiron 15z w/ i7 + nontouch (5523)) and therefore also a UEFI motherboard by default and I love it. Maybe it's because UEFI feels more modern than BIOS but that's besides the point. The problem I'm having is a little frustrating when trying to boot an ARCH_201302 USB in UEFI mode.
I've recently purchased a Lenovo T430, and sadly when configuring it, I forgot all about the Linux UEFI Fiasco, and kept the default option of pre-installing Windows 8.
I'm able to disable secure-boot, but what I would like to know is whether I need to install Ubuntu in UEFI or Legacy Mode.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 with a LiveUSB. I have windows 8 preinstalled and am trying to dual boot on UEFI.

So, I got a friend to lend me his copy of Windows 8 Pro.
I had recently bought a Dell Inspiron 7520 laptop , Which was pre-loaded with windows 8. I wanted to set up dual boot with Ubuntu 12.10 . I am following issues . Any help will be really appreciated .
1) I was not able to start ubutu 12.10 live CD in UEFI mode. I am not able to find any bios setting to do so . The bios firmware version , thats been loaded with the laptopn is A07.
My motherboards firmware must be out of date, because I couldn't get UEFI Shell v2 to work, and that's the one that includes bcfg command. Also, I couldn't boot anything other than my pendrive in UEFI mode.
I have a working Ubuntu uefi-install(12.10). My hdd is partioned with gpt and the efi-partition is on "sda1", and I have a bios-grub partition at "sda2". Ubuntu is installed and is booting perfectly in uefi-mode, and obviously has everything in place, like uefi-firmware and bootloader. I then installed Crunchbang the usual way, in legacy-mode, and grub is written to mbr/sda.
