dropped usb My passport, Ubuntu sees it but

I purchased a 1.5TB seagate drive about a month ago, this drive was placed in a USB caddie so that i could transfer data onto it from different sources before i fitted it to my computer. I have 2 other drives in the computer which are IDE, this drive i fitted into an internal SATA slot- (before it was fitted its drive letter assignement was removed)

I am looking for some advice on how to recover the data from my usb flash drive that may have been corrupted.

I am having a problem with a western digital hard drive. I have plugged it in and it is definitely powered up and spinning but it is not coming up when I plug it in. It isn't coming up on gparted either... any help would be much appreciated.

I do a lot of live system building, which eventually involves imaging a USB drive with the built binary image:

dd if=binary.img of=/dev/sdX sync

...where /dev/sdX is a USB drive. As part of my workflow, I like to have Ubuntu's Disk Utility open so I can verify the drive letter and unmount anything that gets mounted automatically.

I've got an interesting problem...

A friend asked me to recover data from a failing external (usb) hard drive, which i've been doing using the ddrescue utility. However, every few hours the drive stops responding (this is why I'm recovering the data) and read speed drops to 0. At this point if i unplug it for 5 mins and plug it back in I can rerun the ddrescue and continue recovering.

Newbie here. I have googled for days and can't seem to find the answer to my problem. Here is the background. I was running Windows Vista on my desktop at home until I got fed up and decided to go with linux again. I have a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu Karmic.

I can't seem to mount the drive even though Samsung advertises it as being Linux compatible when switching it over to AV mode (by ejecting the tray and holding the eject button until the LED comes on) I have tried inserting a cd into the drive but it acts as if it is going to start reading the disk and then suddenly stops spinning after about 1 second and repeats this process.

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on one of my older laptops (Dell Mini 10V, modified with a Western Digital 640GB drive). I use it to keep a lot of documents (and pictures) on... I have kept it backed up via an external HD (Western Digital 1TB 2.5” drive).

Recently, it quit being able to copy all the folders to the external drive. Then external drive appeared to become corrupted.

I have two desktop computers, a Dell running ubuntu 10.04, and an Acer running win 7.
