New to Ubuntu. Experienced with CentOS and yum. I have 12.04 LTS Desktop 64-bit for now and I'm trying to wean myself off of all the GUIs so that I can make a move to Server so as to boost my VM capabilities.
Question: How can I tell from the CLI whether a Kernel update is available? The GUI Update Manager says I'm due for a kernel update (3.2.0.29.31 -> 3.2.0.34.37).
I am using Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit on notebook core 2 duo, 4GiB RAM.
In order Ubuntu to detect and use more than 3GiB RAM, I apt-get PAE Kernel. The problem comes when there were two update of kernel, linux-generic kernel and linux-generic-pae.
Should I update linux-generic-pae kernel only? if the answer yes, how to stop update notification of linux-generic kernel?
I run dist-upgrade and I ended up with this error:
Error!
Code:
glen@Raring:~$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Hello, first of all i just want to tell you that I'm very new to the Linux world, so please be patient.
Ok, so here is my problem.
I tried to upgrade the kernal to 3.8.2 but it didn't work. So after learning that 3.8 wouldn't work with bumblebee I tried to go back and install 3.5.25.
I updated to 12.10 from 12.04 and the zfs module for the new version is missing.
Code:
# zpool list
Failed to load ZFS module stack.
Load the module manually by running 'insmod <location>/zfs.ko' as root.
So I looked for it...
Code:
# uname -a
Linux Gollum 3.5.0-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 11 18:51:59 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Code:
# find /lib/m
I was using UCK to customize an Ubuntu 11.10 image, and ran a dist-upgrade on it (from the console) to try to update all of the packages on it. The upgrade worked successfully for all but two packages, so I tried again and got the same error message. This is what happened:
# sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hi there!
this is about Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS
Whenever I log in the system is telling me that there are 6 updates pending, 6 of them being security updates.
I'm doing apt-get update followed by apt-get upgrade and then it tells me it held back:
linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server
So, apparently these are kernel updates and I know I have to do a dist upgrade to get rid
