By default, if I connect an external display under Xfce, it is not activated until I choose to in xfce4-display-settings or lxrandr.
If set to use external display only and then restart with that monitor closed, the external-display setting is kept and I have no display at all; and have to start the external monitor in order to change the settings to use the internal display.

Hi there,
I am trying to connect my external monitor with my laptop and to use it as the only output. If I disable the laptop display, activate the external monitor and set it as the primary output, everything seems to work fine. Yet the desktop displayed by KDE seems to be twice the length of the physical monitor. That means that e. g.
I have the following set-up:

Are you saying that every time you connect your laptop to an external monitor you need to bring up Menu -> Settings -> Display?I use Xfce with a laptop and external monitor (via docking station) and all I do to connect/disconnect is hit fn-F7 to bring up the external monitor menu. I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, 900 Mhz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM,10.1 GB disk running Lubuntu 12.04. When I start the computer, and I check the display resolution, Monitor Settings claims that the max resolution is 1024x768.

Apologies if this is somehow covered elsewhere. I've done a good bit of searching to no avail.
I'm running 2 monitors from a fresh install of F17 on my Dell Latitude D410.
Monitor 1: the laptop's LCD screen - detected, all fine and dandy.
Monitor 2: an external flatscreen monitor.
I have a Sony Vaio laptop running F17/KDE4.9, with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 graphics. Laptop display resolution is 1280x800. I connect a new ACER 1920x1080 external monitor via VGA cable (no other socket on laptop) hoping to have the option of using it at native resolution but am only offered 1280x800. How can I get the correct resolution offered in the Display Settings GUI?
