I have a 320GB hard disk. I only use either ubuntu or kubuntu (12.04 for now). I don't want to use windows or any other dual boot os. And i need only 3 partitions on my hard disk. One for the OS and remaining two for data storage. I don't want to create swap also.
Now can i create all primary partitions on the hard disk. Are there any disadvantages in doing so.
I was going to install a completely fresh Linux distribution (Mageia) and I saw it as an opportunity to reorganize my partitions.
I'm going to install Arch Linux on my new laptop, and want to keep the existing Windows 7 installation as well. The problem is that there can only be four logical partitions, and they are all being used by Windows/Lenovo:I was thinking of converting the C drive, which is the largest (600 GB) into an extended type, then using that partition to create logical partitions and use those for Arch.
Under installation type is says " Your installation medium is on /dev/sda1. You will not be able to create, delete, or resize partitions on this disk, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there."
Im currently having a problem when trying to setup an unattended install of windows 7. When the hard drive has no partitions the install goes fine. However if the hard drive has any existing partitions, it throws up an error message saying it can't create new partitions. So I end up having to launch a live CD and delete the partitions before doing the unattended install.
Trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on a partition of a hard disk, but keep getting this error:
executing grub-install/dev/sda1 failed
Can't delete all partitions as there is important data on the other partitions.
I have 2 partitions on my computer and I want to shift some of the remaining space from sda1 to sda6. Can I just use Gparted to resize the OS partition then allocate to SDA6.
How would I do this without killing either ?

I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 alongside with Windows 7.
I have a laptop with 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition.
I want to install linux in extended partition.
But when I custom create partitions, it says : "Couldn't allocate requested partitions, not enough free space on the disk"
I can't even create Physical Volume.
I can't remove the primary partitions, as those are for recovery and windows os.
Here's the screenshot.
