America may be the land of spacious skies and amber waves of grain, but what it doesn’t have is major retail stores selling PCs with Linux preloaded. To get those, you need to move to the “developing” world, as Canonical highlighted most recently with plans to sell Ubuntu computers built by Dell in India.

As we've noted before, Canonical and giant PC maker Dell Computer have already found new horizons for Ubuntu in China in India. And, Dell deserves praise for being one of the few big hardware makers to offer Linux options on its computers over the years.
Dell Computer is continuing to exapnd its support for Linux and open source platforms. We've reported on the company's work with Canonical to bring Ubuntu-based systems to both India and China, including an expansion of this effort. And, Dell just announced that it is delivering an Ubuntu laptop, part of its "Project Sputnik" effort, targeted at developers.

I will soon be purchasing a new laptop & currently the Dell Inspiron 17 is my favourite. I have been looking around for compatibility issues and it seems to be fine.
Today Dell announced its official re-entry into the Linux laptop market. Project Sputnik, first announced in May, is graduating from Dell’s internal incubator program into a real product. According to project lead Barton George, Dell will sell a special “developer edition” of its XPS13 Ultrabook starting this fall.

I currently use Ubuntu on a Macbook Pro that belongs to my work, which will have to go back to my work soon as I am changing jobs!
