I just installed ubuntu on my netbook and am loving it!!
What I’m now trying to do is set up my root account.
I tried to run the following command at a command prompt:
su root
and use the password for the main account i set up during the install process. but that didn't work.
I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04. I installed with one user account, then added a second user account using the GUI dialog box method, making myself an Administrator type.
I now use the second user account. When using update manager and it needs to add or remove packages, it asks me for the "password for root" rather than my own password.
I am using kde 4.4.5. When I try to run an application that needs root, I am asked for root password. In gnome I am asked for my password.
Gnome used gksudo, gksu-properties is configured to use sudo mode.
I have no root password (it is not set on this machine).
How do I tell the kde menus to use kdesudo?
I originally installed the default system, without kde. I then added kde.
Hello,
Here's my current situation. I have installed Backtrack 5 R1 (which is essentially Ubuntu 10.04 with lots of preloaded packages) onto a 16 GB flash drive, and everything words fine until I change the root password. I have the Gnome 64-bit edition.
The default root/toor combination works, and I'm able to load the desktop using startx.
I just installed Lubuntu as a user. It didn't ask me
anything during the install about root, or what root
password I would like. So now, when I need root to
change /etc/fstab or /etc/rc.local, I can't. When I
try to set up root admin in Users Accounts, it says
there already is a root. Nobody said nothing to ME
about setting up a root account.
What am I missing? I change the root password on a unix machine, then try to log in with that password. PasswordAuthentication is set to yes in sshd_config and the sshd daemon has been restarted.
Bit of an odd problem. I've got a server I can SSH into as one of two logins: root or erik. Once I've logged in as erik I've tried to switch to the root user:
# sudo su - root
Password:
And entered the password. After several failures I thought I might have forgotten.
Hi.
I installed suseLinux the other day. I left while it was loading. It completed without asking me for a root password. Now i want to download adobe. The computer tells me I need to enter the root password. But I don't know it.
What do I do?
Thanks!
David
I just installed 11.3 32b, added myself to the sudoers files, but when I sudo it asks me for root password and not my password, what am I doing wrong?
I remember when setting my password during installation I unselected something like "use this password for system administration".
shalom@shalom-laptop:~> sudo zypper up
root's password:
