The Debian GNU/Linux Project has moved to better integrate patches from distributions that are derived from it by setting up the Debian dErivatives eXchange project (DEX).
.deb is the extension of the Debian software package format and the most often used name for such binary packages. Like the "Deb" part of the term Debian, it originates from the name of Debra, then girlfriend and now ex-wife of Debian's founder Ian Murdock.
Debian packages are also used in distributions based on Debian, such as Ubuntu and others.

Debian is one of the oldest and most popular distributions among the Linux users. There are probably hundreds of distributions which are based on Debian, or others (like Mepis) which are based on distributions which in turn are based on Debian. Ive written a lot of reviews of distros based on Debian, but never a review of Debian itself. So this time around I decided to look at Debian 5 (Lenny). Debian, if you arent familiar with it, is the rock upon which popular distributions like Ubuntu and MEPIS are built on.
Almost all the major Linux distributions are using LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice. It is with huge pleasure that the Debian GNU/Hurd team announces the release of Debian GNU/Hurd 2013. This is a snapshot of Debian "sid" at the time of the Debian "wheezy" release (May 2013), so it is mostly based on the same sources.
A few words about me: some years ago I started using Linux with Ubuntu 7.10, and from that moment I have always been faithful to Debian and its derivatives. I tried (and I'm using) Debian Wheezy, Aptosid (formerly Sidux), Linux Mint Debian Edition, Mepis, Ubuntu and others. Now I'm trying CrunchBang 10 Statler with backports, and I found it a very good distro.
The Debian Project is seeking a few GNOME lovers to help with a "massive cleanup in the insane amount of bugs submitted against GNOME packages." The Debian/GNOME Bug Weekend will be the last weekend of February, on the #debian-gnome channel on OFTC.

I would say the mirror was down, you are not the first reporting this. You can also change the Debian mirror if this one is too slow. This list should help you:http://www.debian.org/mirror/list.en.htmlhttp://http.debian.net/debian, this one, seems really to be a betch.
