I started off with changing to the folder I want to change permissions for, and that is the opt folder.
$ cd /opt/
test@testVM:/opt$
So I tried changing the permissions for this folder now using:
sudo chmod 775
And that hasn't worked.
I have an assignment to write PHP code, and upload the data to our school student's account. To make sure my script is working, I need to change the permissions on the files.
I am not a root because I am a student. How can I fix that problem?
chown: changing permissions of `nyccrash.txt': Operation not permitted
Thanks.
I am trying to make changes to my website over ftp but when I save any files it changes the permissions and owner to my username. I can edit files in the same folder trough samba without changing the permissions. I really don't understand how the permissions for the /var/www folder work and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get it to work.
I used gksudo nautilus to consolidate a boatload of files from various old hard drives.
I know, this question is asked a lot of times. Just searched for several hours, but nothing i did worked.
The thing i want to do is setup a little NAS. As a test i took a memory stick to serve as storage. The memory stick is formatted with a fat32 filesystem.
Because fat32 is a windows filesystem it's not compatible with the way of changing permissions the linux way.
It worked fine until yesterday but today I cannot save documents anymore. Something related to permissions. I tried changing my Documets folder permissions in Properties but nothing changed. What can I do?
Thanks.
I am trying to figure out how I can restrict other people who use this computer from installing programs with wine.
Here's what I did so far:
- Clicked on 'Browse c:\ Drive' in the Wine Directory
- Right clicked on 'Program Files'
- Clicked on The 'Permissions' Tab
- Set permissions to 'Access Only'
In my Linux box I have two directories:
work files with wrong permissions
older versions of the same files with the right permissions (permissions and users and groups)
I need to syncronize the permissions only without changing the file contents. I tried rsync but I can't find a suitable option. Can you give me some advice?
Thanks in advance.
We have various of machines here with all sorts of hardware and Operating Systems, most of them do regular tasks with bash that an agent executes.
However it came to my attention that some Solaris machines we own do not have stat util, and adding it would be a problem that might take time (ironic)
Meanwhile I was trying to imitate one sisyphean task which stat did in a magnificent way:
