When I send print to a network printer (HP Laserjet 2200d), CUPS asks for username/password. It doesn't happen with other printers and I'm sure its a CUPS issue, because it's asking the password even if I'm not connected to the network.
Here is my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:
#
#
# Sample configuration file for the CUPS scheduler.
I determined that /etc/cups/cupsd.conf was an empty file. I fixed it with the following: $ sudo cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.confI then made the necessary changes to the config file and started cups.

Hi all, I am able to connect to the cups server of my university and the printers are all displayed in the printing settings app. I can print a test page on any of the printers from there. But when i try to print any document, image etc no printer comes up on the screen.
I have setup cups on Ubuntu 12.04 machine as a Server. And have setups cups on another Ubuntu(12.04) and Solaris (sparc AMD i386) machines as clients.
Cups is up and running on server as well as on the clients. But, none of the print requests sent from either Ubuntu clients or Solaris clients are being received by Cups Server.
I have the same problem with Epson Stylus TX133... It seems there is a problem with ghostscript https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124366. I tried downgrading but it didn't work for me.

warning:Newbie's answer. I sucessfully connected a HP Printer a couple of days ago. At first my GNOME desktop can't detect it automatically. I used 'hptal-init', downloaded from the repository and put it in rc.conf before cups. hptal-init enables detection of usb devices I believe at boot.
I haven't been able to get my Arch machine (cups 1.6) to see networked printers still running 1.5. For a while I downgraded to 1.5, but that wasn't sustainable.
the user are in lp and sys hp-check seems okay the daemons are running cups and avahi-daemon, can there be simething wrong with the dns?
