I read the all of the information I could find on wine, and it wasn't very much (having issues with the search feature of the forum).
I understand that the idea behind it is to make it so that you can install windows programs, and have them run on ubuntu.
I was installing cygwin on my Windows 7 desktop. I guess I picked a bad mirror site because the download speed was very slow and it wasn't able to give me all the packages I wanted.
I closed the setup in too much haste. I think it was still downloading and not yet installing though.

How does everyone backup their data, ie /home ??
By that I don't mean what program do you use, but what method do you use?
Specifically maintaining permissions etc.
I tried installing a poker app,from this site
I downloaded the file,clicked install using wine (i have the latest version of wine)
The installation completed ok,but when I try to open the app,it opens,then almost immediately shuts down..Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I am running fedora 10 and am trying to get read/write permissions to my windows ntfs partition.
I have installed ntfs-3g but when i go to the permissions tab i get this message "The permissions of "disk-1" could not be determined.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-31-virtual x86_64) and changed the permissions of the "etc" directory to 444 (sudo chmod 444 etc).
Hi All,
I have an ftp process that is connecting to a Solaris server and pushing files into a directory. The default file permissions are rw-r--r-- . I want the file permissions to be rw-rw-r--. How can I configure the directory so any file created there will have the permissions rw-rw-r-- ?

I seem to have deleted some files on my media drive, simply by changing the permissions.
The Story
I have many operating systems installed on my computer, and constantly switch between them. I bought a 1TB HD and formatted it as HFS+ (not journaled). It worked well between OSX and all of my linux installations while having much better metadata support than NTFS.
