@OP - some HDD's use a jumper to control SATAII/III behavior.  I don't think the WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0 does based on a quick google search... but does it?  From the link you posted, this board contains only SATAIII connectors... does it?  Have you tried another connector?

You should not need to manually update.  Likely, your mirror is not sync'ed up.  I recommend using reflector which will keep your mirrorlist fresh.
