In vim, control-left and control-right are back and forward whitespace-separated word (i.e. synonyms for B and W), the same as web textareas and bash.
But when running screen, these keys stop working.
I just noticed that the media keys on my keyboard are not working: volume up, volume down, mute,...Also, ctrl+alt+L is not locking my screen.I'm wondering if this is a gnome-settings-daemon issue. g-s-d is running, and working in part because it sets my background, but why are none of these other keys working?Which application actually handles these keys?
I've spent 2 hours on this and still can't figure this out. It's driving me insane. Please save my sanity.
When I press mute, the pnmixer control in the top right shows that I've pressed mute, but the sound is not muted.
Just installed vanilla Xubuntu 12.04 LTS & updated on a ThinkPad E325 with Conexant CX20671 sound card. I notice volume hot keys work under Xubuntu DE but not XFCE. You can summon sound settings under Xubuntu but they are missing under XFCE. Also sound bar is greyed out though sound will still function.
I noticed that the volume control when I use xubuntu is not really working properly.
I can see, that xubuntu is recognizing that it should do something and displays a small image indicating volume up/down or mute.
My laptop's media keys (volume up/down/mute) are detected via xev and showkey. I can go into System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts and set the volume controls with the media keys. However when I try to use the keys they do not function properly.
I tried setting the keys and rebooting the system but that hasn't worked. Any ideas?

A little update:Don't know if this is of any use to anybody - but I figured out why my volume keys weren't working:In .config/openbox/autostart you have a little entry:## Volume keys daemon
xfce4-volumed &And obviously this daemon inhibited the keys so I couldn't map them to do what I want them to do.
Use xev to test the keystrokes.
