Something else is wrong. Start with finding out what app(s) are soaking up the CPU with a util like htop. Could also be IO so try iotop -Pao.

Not using UUIDs with this... /dev/sdaX and they are fine. Ran e2fsck -v -f /dev/sda[1,3] and found nothing. Confused
Pretty sure the OP needs the 96xx series of drivers for that antiquated hardware.
