It’s somewhat apt that Ubuntu’s ‘Lenses’ feature has brought Unity into clearer focus for many of its initial critics.
The search-orientated display windows
– called ‘Lenses’ – make finding specific files, apps or information
easy to do thanks to their tuned ‘search backends’ – called Scopes’.
Below are 10 of the best Lenses and Scopes available for Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot” an
I would like to be able to customize Unity's lenses, for instance to make Photo lens to search for photos in directories that I mark and the same rule for the music lens.
How can I do this ?
Currently I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with some additional lenses.
Is it possible to search though all lenses at the same time?
For example when I type "Tom" it looks for all calendar events (through Calendar events lenses), all Empathy contacts and all music titles contains this string.
Please advice me, how to do that?
When I search for a file through Activities nothing comes up.
There are no files whatsoever displayed as a result of a search, also no folders beside the basic ones that come with the installation
(eg. Documents, Videos, etc.). There is no list of recent files either.
Is this how GNOME is supposed to run? :Y
It doesn't seem very useful if we can only search for programs.
Application lenses seem to be ordered alphabetically by default:
From left to right: dash home --> applications - extras-unity-lens-wikipedia - files - music - recoll - video
Is there any way you can change this order? Perhaps by modifying the .lens files in /usr/share/unity/lenses?
I'd rather hear from someone who has done this already before messing around on my own.
I have been using Ubuntu for some time now, but never really had the need to search for a specific file until recently. I used nautilus browser set to 'file system' to attempt to search the entire drive. The search lasted a second and turned up zero results.
Add a variety of powers to Ubuntu’s dashboard, allowing you to quickly find news, stock information, the weather in any town, or even torrents. It’s just a matter of finding and installing the right lenses, and the “Scopes” PPA contains several.
Not everyone loves it, but Ubuntu’s dashboard is great for searching.
Hello!
I have a problem: unity lenses Music, Video, Files and... hmm... adult lens do not work. Whatever I type there, there are no results. Probably, I have some package not installed, because I installed Unity to Kubuntu. Please, help me to solve this problem. 12.10.
My dash is completely empty. The alt-f2 run screen load applications if I type in the commands. But the others are completely empty on my own profile. In a guest profile, they work as expected.
I've read the other similar questions and tried both of these options.
