Please forgive me. This is my first venture into the world of Linux so have mercy on me. :-)
I just bought a Compaq Presario CQ60-420US Laptop and I'd love to take Vista off but I tried to install Ubuntu and the wireless button is disabled on bootup and remains disabled regardless of what I do.
Am I stuck with Vista?
Hey guys, been helping someone with their Ubuntu install on an old Compaq Presario v6000 (v6302au specifically it seems) and there's no wifi.
Not only is there no wifi, but there's no wlan0 in iwconfig, nor does the wifi card show up in lspci, lshw or lsusb.
I have a friend with a Compaq Presario 2200 Laptop:
Celeron M 1.4 GHz
1gb Ram
Intel Extreme Graphics (?)

At any rate, he's running Ubuntu 11.04 right now but he would like to free up some resources for 720p video.
What do you all think would work better, Xubuntu or Lubuntu?
I am currently using 11.10 on my Compaq Presario V3130 machine. When recently I tried to use wireless on my laptop i found that it is not working as the option of "Enable Wireless" is not highlighted in the network manager. My wifi switch is on and earlier I had used wifi with 11.04. Please help on this as don't know much about Ubuntu.
Hi all,
I'm using a compaq CQ50 AU 106 laptop with AMD athlon X2(1.9 GHz)and 3 gb ram.
I was running an Ubuntu only installation of 10.04 and 10.10 (both 32bit) and a Kubuntu 10.04 (64 bit).
My wireless card - Athreos 5007 card was working very satisfactorily, till one day the laptop shutdown/hibernated automatically due to low battery.
I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop and the WiFi light will not come on. It was working when I was using Ubuntu 10.03.
My laptop has a Broadcom BCM 4311 802.11 b/g wlan card.
I tried everything I could find and nothing works. If it helps, I am not a programmer. I'm just a novice.
Could someone help me with following..
I have Compaq Presario C773TU laptop.
I want to install ubuntu on this laptop.
I tried 8.04.4 and 10.04.4 but both these are getting stuck at 5% when installation starts. I tried defining ext2/ext3 for "/" mount, but it is not proceeding, and getting stuck at 5%.
I have a Compaq Presario 5000. I have been trying to make the wireless work on this thing. I go to wireless assistant and try to enable the wireless and I follow the instructions to enter f10 upon setup. I am then asked for a password. I do not have the password. Is there a way around this or a standard passwork that will work. I am just trying to enable the wireless on the computer.
Heres a link to the Compaq presario 1230's spec's http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c00255302
I just got this thing today, saved it from going into the dump. It's an OK laptop, and its rather responsive for a 233MHz Cyrix CPU and 32MB SDRAM (SoDIMM Style).
