Command or script to change cursor icon in Linux

http://stackoverflow.com – Is there any kind of command, or series of commands that will allow me to change the cursor icon to use an icon in a specified file? I'm using Linux Mint with Cinnamon (which is a fork of Gnome, so most things that work in Gnome will work with Cinnamon). I looked into PyGtk and specifically gtk.gdk.Cursor, but it doesn't seem to do what I'm looking for. (HowTos)
