Linux Mint is the rising star of GNU/Linux desktop world! On distrowatch it became the most popular distro (although the popularity metrics isn’t based on user base of Linux Mint or Ubuntu but the page hits on the site). Creators of Gnome - the popular desktop environment for Linux - are planning for a brand-new operating system called GNOME OS, which is scheduled to arrive in 2014.
Allan Day, a Gnome UX designer, wrote in his blog:
"The idea of GNOME OS has been around for a couple of years, and there has been a fair amount of confusion about what it means.
The Ubuntu GNOME Remix (UGR) is a new project that aims to provide a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience built from the Ubuntu repositories.
UGR 12.10 is the first release for this project and there are still a few minor issues, but it is a great alternative if anyone is interested in using Ubuntu with pure upstream GNOME experience, rather than stock Unity interface.
