http://www.linuxquestions.org – Howdy, So what I am looking to do is combine an archive and a script file. I would like to have a number of files compressed into an archive package and when a user double clicks on the package instead of having it open with the archive manager, instead have it run a shell script that is also packaged with the files. This shell script will do a number of things including handling where the files are extracted to. Over all this would be similair to a self-extracting installer Windows users are used to using. Can this be accomplished and if so mind pointing me in the right direction of what t (HowTos)

Trying to use the 7-zip self extracting archive GUI and it fails. When I try to create a "Self Extracting Installer" option, at the end of the install it runs my batch file and it appears to be extracting all the files just before it does that, but after extraction, the files are nowhere to be found (except within the .7z archive).

i want to make an application which is written in shell script and in Bourne shell (sh)

i want, when my script is executed, it read all the files in the directly and move them to folders according to their extension.

suppose i have a files:

test.txt test.jpg test.docx test.tgz

all files txt goes to directory txt, jpg extention files goes to folder jpg and same the docx files to

I have the following bash script:

tar -zxvf $1 cd $1

It should extract the archive file and enter the directory that was created. Typically, package archive file creates directory with the same name, as the file, without extension, for example, mpc-1.0.1.tar.gz creates mpc-1.0.1 directory. How can I change the line cd $1 to get directory name?
