what happens if you bypass the DM & login to a vt (ctrl+alt+f1) then start cinnamon from there?
I'm having the same issue with systemd-coredumpctl & I cannot find any way to delete the core dumps held within journalBeginning to consider a move as systemd is proving to be a bit too contrived for me & I hear it wants to control sysctl as well!!
what are the differences between the 2 rc.lua's ?what are the differences between the 2 awesome instalations ?what happens if both are exactly the same in all ways ?These questions will hold the answers.
I don't really think you are going to get what you want easily but still I have programs that open on certain tabs (check my dot files for configs) You may be able to get that kind of behaviour from a script wrapper of some kind ...possibly.

Solved!Ok so I went out on a limb:1) uninstalled the pidgin package & all plugins for libpurple2) backed up my .purple folder (as I have had this for some years on different distro's)3) reinstalled pidgin, finch & plugins4) copied configuration files & conversation logs,etc from old .purple to new .purple one at a timeall appears to be ok now!wish I knew what caused that weird beh
