Hello:I have just finished installing CrunchBang 64 bit stable and during the install I was never asked to enter a "root" password. I was asked to create a user account and user password.I have just discovered by using synaptic for updates that my "root" password is the same as my user password. How do I change the "root" password?
I just installed Lubuntu as a user. It didn't ask me
anything during the install about root, or what root
password I would like. So now, when I need root to
change /etc/fstab or /etc/rc.local, I can't. When I
try to set up root admin in Users Accounts, it says
there already is a root. Nobody said nothing to ME
about setting up a root account.
While studying "Learning the Shell"
As I try terminal entries, I GET 'Permission Denied". Then
I try "su" to become the root user. When I use the password
that I entered as I installed Ubuntu 11.04, I get Authentication
failure.
I just installed ubuntu on my netbook and am loving it!!
What I’m now trying to do is set up my root account.
I tried to run the following command at a command prompt:
su root
and use the password for the main account i set up during the install process. but that didn't work.
What exactly does this mean? A Google search didn't reveal a whole lot about this. I've noticed in 11.2 that when (for example) I enter my root password to install updates, a little key icon appears in the tray. If I click it (which I did, by mistake :) ), the updates won't finish, so this obviously drops the root privileges for the updater applet.
Dear all,
I'am strugling with becoming root on a system which boots over a network (PXE) and uses the Knoppix Terminal Server which is running on a different computer.
Booting the other computer via the network works perfect and Knoppix 6.2 is loaded within a few minutes.
Hi
I've lost the root password to my system (or, I've lost all my passwords to the system, and I need a root account for reseting it so I can use sudo). The root account was locked with "passwd -l" so I tried booting into recovery mode, but I later discovered that I needed a password for dropping into root shell.
After upgrading the os from 5300-06 to 5300-11, this weird behaviour happened.
My system had another unix account, let's call it "abc", purposely configured its uid to 0 for working as a root with all its authorities.
Currently they are the same with 2 of my dedicated server.
I wonder if I change my cpanel whm password, will the root ssh password change too?
The other way around, if I change the ssh password with password command, will whm password change too?
This thread http://forums.cpanel.net/f5/changing-whm-root-password-command-line-3457... seems to suggest that it's yes but somehow doesn't work for
