CentOS 5.8 - Can't login to tty1 as root after updates?

http://serverfault.com – I've ran a yum update on my CentOS 5.8 box and now I am unable to log into the console as root. Basically what happens is I receive the login prompt, enter the correct username and password, and am immediately spit back to the login prompt. If I enter an incorrect password, I am told the password is incorrect, therefore I know that I am using the proper credentials. The only log I can seem to find of what's going on is /var/log/secure which simply contains: 15:33:41 centosbox login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0) 15:33:41 centosbox login: ROOT LOGIN ON tty (HowTos)

I was working normally and the GUI just failed, all I could still see were any open windows. I rebooted the machine from tty1 and now I can't login anymore under my normal user accounts.

I enter my credentials, it appears to login, and immediately goes back to the login screen. Note that under tty1 I can still login with my user account and do everything.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

I recently installed Solaris 10 as a VM. I was using the JDS and shut down the vm when I left the office. When I rebooted today I login in at the desktop login screen and press ok but I am reverted to the console screen for a spilt second and then back to the login screen. I log in as root and my password is correct because I am not met with an incorrect login error.

sir.......... I am new to linux . I have installed CORE FEDORA 10 in graphics mode and uses defaults installation. but it led me to a black screen asking.......

localhost login:root password:amarjeet(my root password)

but after this it look like.

" incorrect login" every time i tried to login.

I have installed 12.04 LTS but surprisingly not able to login as root. I have unlock and set the password for root but while login i can not see 'other' option in GUI login where i can put root id and password.

please help me.

Using the defaukt x86_64 kernel openSuSE 11.2 (uograded from 11.1) works fine.

I have compiled my own kernel using the 11.1 config with minor changes. Botting runs fine and looking at the boot.msg compared between the default and my own kernel I only see preloadtrace.ko module missing on my own kernel which I would not expect causing mthe problem.

I has Centos 5.5 with kernel 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5.

My problem is this:

I can login as root in to Gnome and ssh but not in console In fact I can login with anyuser in to Gnome and ssh but not in console.

By the console I'm referring to tty1-tty6.

I’m trying to execute the login command but it fails.

As root (via SSH) I get:

root@server:~# login Connection to 192.168.0.50 closed.

The SSH connection is closed.
