Gnome 3 with Gnome Shell is not something that everyone would want to try, after being called as "unholy mess" by Linus Torvalds himself [1]. It has a number of shortcomings for a Gnome 2 user; you don't even get a desktop to put your shortcuts or files :'( . Then why would someone still want to install Gnome 3 and try it?
This is a weird one. Nautilus suddenly stopped showing any files in the Desktop folder of my Windows 7 partition. It correctly shows files in all other folders. What's even stranger is that if I do
cd /windows/Users/myuser/Desktop
ls -l
from the terminal, all the files show, no problem.
I recently thought it would be a good idea to start hiding files and folders and encrypting things. All was going well until curiosity struck me. I wondered while I was staring at my Desktop and I was in my Desktop directory in the terminal looking at the files on my Desktop.
Hi everyone.
My desktop icons move around the desktop as if they had a mind of their own. I prefer to keep everything on my desktop, so it has many icons until I clean it up and archive old projects.
But, the icons never stay where I put them!!
I understand that this is a totally novice question but...
What is the best way for me to transfer files between two PC's? I have a laptop with Ubuntu Desktop (12.04) and a local server I'm setting up using Ubuntu Server. I'm used to windows environment where I might typically browse the network via Windows explorer and move files around.
I have been working on how to create shortcuts to my desktop to a new application I installed on my linuxbox.
I hope someone has an answer about how I can create a shortcut on my desktop.
I was able to do so before when I use to use gnome desktop, but with unity I have not been able to create any shortcuts to my desktop or anywhere else.
Thanks
Harold
I think I disabled my desktop? Or the commands for it at least. Alt+F2 still works but others, especially the terminal command (CTRL+ALT+F2) do not.
They used to work a while ago when I was getting Ubuntu set up to how I like it. And I've been trying over the last few days to get this to work, but it wont.
A couple of months ago, I upgraded from OpenSUSE 11.1 w/Gnome desktop to 11.2 w/KDE desktop. While I generally like the refinements of KDE, there is one aspect I absolutely detest, and that is the apparent inability to work with files and folders directly on the desktop as one does with Gnome or Windows or Mac OS.
I've been using Ubuntu for about 3 weeks now, 64-bit Unity wasn't exactly what I was looking for, so I installed KDE using
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
It works well, but with a slight problem. Whenever I create a new shortcut on the Desktop, the center of the screen has this swirling icon. While this is there, I can't left-click on anything on the desktop.
