http://askubuntu.com – I have a Dell XPS 8500 pc, with windows 8, and UEFI, I want a dual boot with windows 8 and ubuntu 12.10(64 bits) .. then I was reading the next tutorial: (add http)help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI but just can't boot any live dvd, I have downloaded 3 times the ubuntu live dvd(in two differents places), and one time the ubuntu secure remix live dvd ( both in 64 bits). I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 (or 12.10) with Windows 8 on a new Sony Vaio, but have run into some problems :)

Specifically, my problems seem to come from choosing UEFI or Legacy as the Bootmode in the BIOS.

Here is what I have found so far:

Windows 8 needs to boot using UEFI, and doesn't work in Legacy mode Ubuntu (both 12.04 and 12.10) needs to boot using Legacy, and won't boot (at l

I've bought new laptop Sony Vaio E14P series. It has pre-installed Windows 8, and I want to dual boot it with Ubuntu 12.10 64bit. I have diabled secure boot and install Ubuntu without any problem from live USB.

When I reboot after installation, it directly boot to windows 8, dont load GRUB at all. So I went to live USB again to boot-repair.

I have a OEM Windows 8 Sony Vaio E-series. Tried dual booting Linux Secure Remix (Ubuntu 12.10) with EFI having followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Disabled Secure-boot.

No option in BIOS to disable fast-boot.

Ran Boot-Repair with recommended conditions and restarted.

I just bought a new laptop from Toshiba and am having alot of problems getting linux to run. It came pre-installed with Windows 8 64 bit and out of the box, it runs well, except that I can't seem to boot into any of my live cd's or live usb's. I believe the problem lies in this whole UEFI business, I've searched around but it seems like there's not that much on this.

Thanks, I have booted Linux mint live without bricking but it was via bios. Arch errors out so bad I can't even get to grub on the disc http://imgur.com/VYU7GPf  sorry for the bad quality, quick snap, not focused... So what you guys are saying is that I would have to some how convert win8 to bios then dual boot traditionally.. I read that UEFI allows you to boot multiboot to both.

I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller.

I had recently bought a Dell Inspiron 7520 laptop , Which was pre-loaded with windows 8. I wanted to set up dual boot with Ubuntu 12.10 . I am following issues . Any help will be really appreciated .

1) I was not able to start ubutu 12.10 live CD in UEFI mode. I am not able to find any bios setting to do so . The bios firmware version , thats been loaded with the laptopn is A07.

So this is a pretty general question, and I think I know how it works, it's just I want to check to make sure I got it right.

I have this laptop that I use the most, and I decided to run Ubuntu on it too so I can constantly practice using Ubuntu. The thing is, I don't think I want to install Ubuntu (as a dual boot) alongside Windows, so I'm going the Live CD route.
