The man behind Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth, has scratched all the circulating rumours about Canonical working on an Ubuntu Tablet version. He said that Ubuntu is all about Servers, Desktops and Netbooks; there are no plans for bringing Ubuntu to a smartphone or Tablet as of now.

As we saw last week, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth envisions the advent of Ubuntu phones, tablets and TVs in the near future. But the open source world’s best hope for conquering emerging hardware arguably lies in Plasma Active, a young project which has quietly been making huge progress lately in the world of mobile platforms.

Ubuntu’s top priority may be knocking Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) off its pedestal, but the Linux distribution — and the company backing it, Canonical — are increasingly following scripts from Apple‘s (NASDAQ: AAPL) playbook to achieve that goal. Most recently, Ubuntu developers introduced an updated version of the Ubuntu One Music Store.

Ubuntu itself may still be a long way away from running on a phone or tablet. But that isn’t stopping Canonical from trying to establish a foothold in the Android market via Ubuntu One, which just saw the release of a new version of its Android app boasting a host of updated features.

It's already a foregone conclusion that Google's Android OS will hop in the handheld tablet ring with Apple's iPhone OS and duke it out for tablet supremacy, and despite canceled products like HP's Slate and Microsoft's Courier, some still believe it will be a Windows 7 device that knocks the iPad from its perch. But what about Ubuntu?

Hoping to put to rest the swirling controversy around Ubuntu 12.10′s integration of Amazon.com search results into the Unity desktop interface, Canonical has published an official summary of its efforts to resolve user complaints.

Will 2013 be the Year of the Linux Tablet? Personally, I’m not about to bet any cash on it just yet. But if Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has his way, Linux developers increasingly will be turning their attention to mobile, tablet and TV platforms over the coming year.
