Cannot log on: black screen/login screen loop

http://askubuntu.com – I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 for a few months now, but have now come across a problem that I can't get past. I am stuck at the log on screen: I enter my password but a black screen flashes up and the log on prompt reappears. I tried using the terminal and I actually have managed to login- but not using the main log on screen. I can't get my desktop active as the log on prompt is there. When I input a wrong password I get an invalid password message- with the correct password, the log on screen just reappears. (HowTos)

Hi

This question is usually responded to with "Liveuser does not need a password".

Well believe it or not in some configuration it is not possible to go passed the login screen of Fedora 11 or 12 KDE.

If you just hit enter which should work, it goes black with a blue flasy thing and then back to the login screen.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.

I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.

I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.

I recently upgraded to Fedora 18..I'm using gnome.. If I lock the screen, I cannot unlock it easily..

That is, I enter my password, click login.. The login button gets grayed out, and nothing.. It just waits. See attached photo: This is what happens after I click login..

Update: I found a weird work-around: I clicked suspend on that login screen. Nothing happened..

I think I just ruined my family's computer!

After many many reboots in a couple days while experimenting with BIOS settings effecting the speed Hardbrake runs at, today I find after a reboot that I have to type in password to log in - ordinarily I have this disabled.

When I DO enter my password, it goes to a black screen for a bit, then returns.

After a new installation of 12.10 on a Lenovo x120e and a restart the Unity shell won't launch.

Installation of 12.10 amd64 yesterday went well. I turned the computer off for the night and when I turned it on this morning I was presented with the login screen. When I enter the password the screen flashes black and returns to the login screen.

I recently updated my 10.04 release and then had a problem with the graphics card so I updated a little more and now have 12.04 which I'm fine with except that when I get to the login screen I can login as a guest and a secondary accout I have, but not as the main, administrator account.

Ok..I'll explain what I did wrong, and then what I did to fix, which led me to my current dilemma.

I thought I was going to be a smartypants and change my password to something really easy. Well, I goofed it up. When I tried to log on, I couldn't.

So I accessed the root shell to change password, but encountered " change password authentication token manipulation error".
