I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a single disc which already had Windows 7 x64 on it. Windows was on two primary partitions, a very large partition C: and a small 100 mb partition. I've been using this computer for the past year with no problems.
During the installation of Ubuntu, I made four partitions: 1) /boot, 2)/(root), 3)/home and 4) SWAP.
this is my first attempt at Linux. I'm trying to dual boot XP sp2 and Ubuntu 11.10. I have the following partitions:
Primary 115GB windows ntfs
Primary 1GB /boot ext4
Primary 25 GB / ext4
Logical 125 GB /home ext4
Swap
I put the boot loader in the /boot partition.

I wanted to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu 12.04LTS. So, I installed Win7 first.
Then I installed Ubuntu 12.04LTS, using the "side by side" option and it went through fine and I got the grub loader asking for which i wanted to boot.
Then, there was around 100gb or unallocated space which I made as a partition of windows.
I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 by creating free space in Windows 8 and then using that space to create 3 partitions, one for SWAP, one for GRUB (mounting point is /boot) and one for the actual OS. I did this so the Windows 8 boot loader wouldn't be overwritten in case I ever wanted to remove Ubuntu.
Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I can't get back into windows (no such device / file not found when trying to load windows boot loader from grub)
I have an SSD(sdb) and 2 TB HDD(sda).
At first, Windows 7 was the only OS in the drive.
Then I installed MINT. Accidentally, I formated the sda1 partition (where the windows 7 bootloader was stored) as ext4, being the mount point of /boot.
When I buy laptop recently,it already install win7.
I remove D to install ubuntu 12.04 64 bits.
At first I only set partitions like this,and I don't change any other partitions related with win7:
swap 16GB
/ 150GB
But I got this message:
The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code.
I tried to delete old ubuntu on dual-boot via win7 to get more win space (partition had non-ajacent NTFS free disk partitions and woldn't allow me to move in either gparted or win) and reinstalled ubuntu with alongside windows selected. I left about 1/2 NTFS and 1/2 ext3 before reinstalling ubuntu.
Ok so I'm having a bit of trouble.
I have installed Ubuntu on my hard drive first and then partitioned and installed Windows 7.
