Ubuntu 12.04 LTS uses Unity as the default Desktop Environment, which is based on Gnome 3. So Gnome 3 themes (window themes + GTK themes) works well in Unity as well as Gnome shell environment.
It's a bug in gnome-themes-standard:https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687314Until it is not fixed, you have the following options:- Revert the patch and rebuild gnome-themes-standard.- Downgrade to gnome-themes-standard 3.6.0.- Switch to another GTK+ theme.

I had posted previously a question about how to make my shell user themes work in gnome. One of the answers directed me to here:

My goal is to make the orange triangle go away so that I can theme my shell. I have Gnome up and running and I am logged into it now.
nabeelimran wrote:Nice review and sum-up :-)One more thing I noticed that the gconf theme settings don't work if the themes are in ~/.themes. They have to be placed in /usr/share/themes.You are right about the ~bird theme series. These have been made fro XUbuntu specifically.
Hi I'm pretty new to Ubuntu but I got to know some advanced stuff pretty quick. I've already installed GNOME 3 shell and the Advanced Settings for Gnome. I downloaded a GTK 3.4 theme and put it in my home/.themes folder, but I can't find it in the GTK themes section of Advanced Settings. I've googled it and used the forum search but nothing helped.
Even since before Gnome Shell‘s official release, people have been hard at work creating some interesting themes for the new desktop environment. Changing themes in Gnome Shell isn’t hard thanks to some nice configuration tools you can install.
Ubuntu 11.10 is based on Gnome 3 – both Unity and Gnome Shell interface works on the top of Gnome3 in 11.10 (it was not the case in earlier version such as 11.04 – that’s why Unity and Gnome shell were not compatible, anyway it’s not a problem anymore).
I am using Kubuntu 12.04 and QtCurve widget style which does not support GTK3:
How can apply a GNOME theme for GTK3 apps?
I found an advice here: installed gnome-themes-standard and gnome-themes-extras packages, created file ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini:
[Settings]
gtk-theme-name = Adwaita
gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
But this didn't help.
I've been on 13.04 since alpha and have gotten really used to gnome fallback with compiz again (it wasn't as well evolved when I switched to Gnome shell in the first place). I have set this up the way I like and am now afraid of the next or second next update dropping beloved fallback mode.
Moving forward, what are my best options in your eyes? Never update gnome from now on?
