Can not get passed the login screen

http://askubuntu.com – I have the same issue as others (see Login returns to login screen [closed]). When I arrived at the login screen, I enter my password, the screen goes black for one second, displaying some text, and then it returns me to a fresh login screen. I can go to a console alt+f1 and login into my account on the command line. It is a fairly fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, plenty of room left on the home dir. Permissions on the home directory are okay 755. Only one user. Any hint because I cannot fix this apparently... Thanks! Oh yes: the xsession-errors log says: "mkdtemp: private socket dir (HowTos)

I am unable to get past the login screen. It won't accept passwords, the screen momentarily goes black, and then returns to the login screen.

I recently found out that you can use CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch from the login screen to the command line. My password works in that situation and I was able to enter terminal mode.

I typed in "startx" to see what would happen.

This question is usually responded to with "Liveuser does not need a password".

Well believe it or not in some configuration it is not possible to go passed the login screen of Fedora 11 or 12 KDE.

If you just hit enter which should work, it goes black with a blue flasy thing and then back to the login screen.

Solaris 10 Login Loop Problem 37 weeks 2 days ago

I recently installed Solaris 10 as a VM. I was using the JDS and shut down the vm when I left the office. When I rebooted today I login in at the desktop login screen and press ok but I am reverted to the console screen for a spilt second and then back to the login screen. I log in as root and my password is correct because I am not met with an incorrect login error.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

I've just installed 11.10, and am using Gnome shell.

My computer crashed earlier this evening, I think it was somewhat overheated and shut itself down. After this, I can no longer log into Ubuntu.

I just did a clean install of 11.3 over my dual boot xp/11.2 system and kept my home directory. When I booted the system a console box came up. I then disabled auto login and rebooted. The login screen showed two users, 1- Tom and 2- Root. When I login as Tom the console comes up and when I boot into Root the GUI KDE system comes up.
