Can I upgrade to a new version of Python on an old version of Ubuntu?

http://unix.stackexchange.com – I have Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS and ran this: $ sudo apt-get install python2.7 I got this: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package python2.7 It can find python2.5, so I don't think I spelled the package name wrong. I wonder if it's because I'm on an older version of Ubuntu (2008). Is there a straightforward way to upgrade to Python 2.7 (or even 2.6) without upgrading my OS? (HowTos)
