I have a Gateway laptop running ubuntu 10.04, and just now have a compaq desktop running windows 7, my laptop has wireless internet connection, it's the only way that i can get it in my room. my desktop has only ethernet plugin.
I am trying Ubuntu on a trial basis to see if I think I could use it in place of Windows. One of the things I can do in Windows is connect my XP laptop thru a wireless access point which is connected by ethernet cable to my desktop, which is set to share its internet connection. The desktop connects to the internet by dialup.

I use gftp to exchange files between the machines. Now is the main part - transfer speed desktop-laptop is 5.5MB/s, laptop-desktop is 3.6MB/s. BTW, while desktop allows download and upload, laptop only downloads.
right then, Ive just dont a fresh install on a old laptop and am needing to download the proptirtary drivers to get the wifi card going. So ive set up a Bridged connection from my Win8 laptop over ethernet to the old laptop but its still not working.
Prior to moving to ubuntu i was using the laptop as a wifi bridge for my win 8 desktop all i need to do now reverse the process.
