Venture capitalists invested $6.5 billion in 890 deals in the third quarter of 2012, according to the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association (based on data provided by Thomson Reuters).
A new MoneyTree Report is being released this evening, showing that annual VC investment dollars have declines for the first time in three years.
Red Hat has by all measures hit the big time, providing validation of the open source business model that even the harshest critics will have a hard time brushing aside. In its fourth quarter, Red Hat's revenue reached $245 million, up 25 percent from last year. The Linux distribution vendor's fourth quarter subscription revenue was $209 million, up 24 percent from the previous year.
First quarter notebook PC revenues grew to $31.1 billion -- a six percent quarter-to-quarter increase, a 31 percent year-to-year boost, and the best quarter since Q3 2008, says DisplaySearch. EMC (NYSE: EMC) recorded its first ever $6 billion quarter in Q4 2012, an increase of 8 percent from last year’s figures, and posted $870 million in earnings for the period, a 5 percent bump over 2011.
Veteran streaming radio platform Pandora released its fourth quarter earnings today, in which it saw its fiscal 2013 revenue of $427.1 million, representing a 56 percent year-over-year increase, and fourth quarter revenue of $125.1 million, an increase of 54 percent year-over-year. In turn, mobile revenue for the fourth quarter grew 111 percent year-over-year to $80.3 million.
Dow Jones Venture Source released its quarterly report on the state of venture capital, including data on number of VC deals, funds raised, M&As and IPOs in the technology sector. According to the report, U.S.-based companies raised $6 billion from 752 venture capital deals in Q1 2013, an 11% decrease in capital and a 6% decrease in number of deals from the previous quarter.
