Worldwide PC shipments are on track to hit 368 million units this year – a weak result for the year according to one analyst firm - but with the market picking up in 2013 when 400 million units are forecast to be shipped.
Reporting results for the second quarter of its financial year, Intel said Atom processor revenues have dropped by 15 percent, and lowered its forecast for 2011 PC sales to around nine percent. But revenue and net income were respectively up 22 percent and 10 percent year-over-year, marking a & fifth consecutive quarter of record revenue,& officials added....
The Asia Pacific server market remained healthy throughout the second quarter of 2011, with year-on-year shipment growth of 25.6 percent and revenue up 26.1 percent compared to the same quarter last year. APAC had the strongest increase in server shipments, with the focus firmly on the Chinese market.
Veteran streaming radio platform Pandora released its fourth quarter earnings today, in which it saw its fiscal 2013 revenue of $427.1 million, representing a 56 percent year-over-year increase, and fourth quarter revenue of $125.1 million, an increase of 54 percent year-over-year. In turn, mobile revenue for the fourth quarter grew 111 percent year-over-year to $80.3 million.
First quarter notebook PC revenues grew to $31.1 billion -- a six percent quarter-to-quarter increase, a 31 percent year-to-year boost, and the best quarter since Q3 2008, says DisplaySearch. Leading the way were mini-note PCs (netbooks), and slates (tablets), which together grew 56.4 percent year-over-year, says the research firm, but tablets are expected to start cutting into netbook sales....
Red Hat has by all measures hit the big time, providing validation of the open source business model that even the harshest critics will have a hard time brushing aside. In its fourth quarter, Red Hat's revenue reached $245 million, up 25 percent from last year. The Linux distribution vendor's fourth quarter subscription revenue was $209 million, up 24 percent from the previous year.
Evidence of market saturation in the U.S. can be seen in new research from IDC that takes a look at the global connected device market. Shipments and revenues declined here, even as worldwide market share grew. The connected device market, meaning smartphones, tablets, and PCs combined, grew 27.4% year-over-year in Q2 2012, IDC says. There was also a slight bump of 2.8% growth from Q1 to Q2.
Apple’s lead in the tablet market took its first serious dent in Q3, according to estimates from analyst IDC, based on tablet shipments (rather than sales).
Yelp narrowed its net loss to $2 million for the third quarter after pulling in $36.4 million in net revenue. That’s up 63 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. The company said total reviews went up by 49 percent to 33 million, while the number of local business accounts grew by 82 percent to 35,500.
