Not only did we recently learn the winners of this year's "Bossie" (Best of Open Source Software) awards, but we have Software Freedom Day coming up this Saturday! Nothing like awards and parties to make a person forget all about hack attacks and other unsavory aspects of the daily grind. Meanwhile, just as Hollywood's Academy Awards tend to dominate conversation for weeks in advance in some social spheres, so the Bossies have a similar effect in the Linux blogosphere's bars and cafes. At the OSCON 2010 open source convention taking place in Portland, Oregon, O'Reilly Media's Edd Dumbill has announced the winners of this years O'Reilly Open Source Awards. The awards have been presented each year since 2005 to individuals for their "dedication, innovation, leadership and outstanding contribution to open source".

At the LibrePlanet conference, held in Cambridge MA. on Saturday, the Free Software Foundation presented its annual free software awards. Winners were the software activist John Gilmore and the internet archive, Archive.org.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the GNU Project today announced the opening of nominations for the 13th annual Free Software Awards. Award for the Advancement of Free Software is presented to an individual who has made a great contribution to the progress and development of free software, through activities that accord with the spirit of free software.

Well, the startups have entered, the judges have judged and the shortlist has been drawn up. The Europas – Europe’s annual awards for tech startups – now has the the shortlist of nominees for this year’s awards available here. Over 1,000 nominated companies have gone through a rigorous judging process in over 30 categories.

The 6th Annual Crunchies Awards are coming up fast and today is the absolute last day to nominate your favorites in technology. Nominations close tonight at 11:59pm PT and will not be open again, so think about who you would like to nominate, and go do it! The Crunchies Awards are going to be held on Thursday, January 31st, 2013 at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.
