I solved it!for anyone with the same issue, here's what happened...In the morning, when I installed wireshark, I also updated libgcrypt because of the dependency. looks like the systemd journalling daemon depended on the old version (v11) however. My guess it that's why it hung during shutdown, and that's definatly why it hung during boot. The solution was...1.
when i boot and it gets past the bios i get a black screen with 2 horizontal lines across instead of the white ubuntu loading symbol. i then hear the noise for the long on prompt. i can then log in blind and get into my install.

I'm trying to revive an old Compaq Evo dekstop by installing Xubuntu on it. I created a bootable USB with Xubuntu 12.04 on it which works fine when I boot it on my laptop.
But when booting the USB from the Compaq (using PLOP boot manager to boot from usb) it gives the Xubuntu loading screen, but the bar stops moving back and forth after several seconds.
Hi, since a few days ago after selecting Linux from the grub menu (dual boot with Windows 7) it hangs on a BSOD (the one with the blinking underscore in the top left in 800x600 resolution). Also the timer has disappeared from the grub menu to auto-boot into Ubuntu.
When it hangs at the BSOD the HDD sounds like its loading but nothing happens.
After i updated all the recommendations on update manager in Ubuntu 12.04LTS.
then after restarting, Ubuntu boots into a black screen with something like a blinking cursor and then some messages display afterwards. But after booting, it works normal as usual.
Is this a bad thing?
Upon checking what version is installed on additional drivers.
I just updated my laptop to F20 and it mostly went well except that I can't boot the machine without going in to the "BIOS" menu.
The problem is that when I boot the machine, grub tries to boot Fedora but it hangs at the "Loading initial ramdisk" line and then powers down. This happens not only with the F20 kernel but the F19 kernels as well.
