I'm trying to make a bootable USB drive for Ubuntu 12.04.1.
The USB drive created by unetbootin doesn't boot; it results in a "Disk I/O error" message.
In trying to create a bootable USB drive, PenDriveLinux installer reports a syntax error in syslinux and then says that the drive will not be bootable. And it isn't.
I'm trying to make a bootable installation USB drive. I've tried usb-creator-gtk, and it starts working only to fail with a segmentation fault, leaving a non-bootable drive. I've tried "unetbootin", and it makes a bootable drive that cannot even begin an installation successfully.
Yes you can dd to the USB drive, or you can create a bootable FAT32 USB, delete or rename /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi file in it, and install syslinux to make it BIOS bootable. But why do you want to disable UEFI boot?

Hi,
I am trying to install ubuntu linux from a bootable pendrive on my sony waio PCG 7D2L. But I couldn't get it to boot from the pen drive. I set my boot order to
Optical drive
Network
Floppy Disk Drive
HDD
there is no USB option present. Also the CDROM is dead so USB boot is the only option. Can anyone please suggest how to boot it from the USB.
I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get.
SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H.
Hi,
Firstly, please excuse the naivety of my post but I am finding this whole thing a bit confusing!
My old laptop has died on me (Windows had a major seizure) - the hard drive is okay but the CD drive no longer works. I have taken out the hard drive and reformatted it.
My laptop, an older Toshiba A100-250, won't boot from a CD or DVD when the HD is attached.
I tried everything I can think of:
Update the BIOS
Reset BIOS to default values
Change boot order in BIOS
Press F12 during startup to select the 'CD/DVD' as the boot device
Despite all efforts, it still won't boot from a bootable CD or DVD.
If I detach the HD (sata) all is working fine.
I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my new ASUS k55a laptop today, and somehow managed to lose access to all partitions on my computer. I tried boot-repair and reinstalling ubuntu but it's not helping. When I try to turn on my computer after the installation, it says to "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" on a black screen.
I have three drives, one connected to my motherboard with 2 more via an SATA board. The installation process identifies sdc as the drive connected to the motherboard, and the secondary (data drives) as sda and sdb. I intend sdc (as #! identifies it) to be the / bootable drive as it connects directly to the motherboard. However, GRUB attempts to install itself onto sda.
