Beginners guide to installing programs in Ubuntu Linux

http://www.opensourcetips.org – It depends on the availability of the prgram to be installed. Some programs comes only as source code, some comes as .deb package( similar to the so called .exe in windows) and some can be installed very easily using synaptic package manager(if you have internet connection). Now what I want is that if at some point, I remove A, then B gets flagged as a package that is no longer needed, and gets removed, too.

In order to become efficient at learning Ubuntu or other linux flavors is it necessary to learn C and Python languages? I don't feel at ease with installing programs that are not available in the Synaptic Package Manager and Ubuntu Software Center. Just the other day I downloaded a package and when to open it and is prompted me for a directory to install it. duhhhh.

G'Day, Just installed the beta2 QQ, grub will not recognise Windows Installs, 12.04 grub works fine. How do I get programs from Universe, ie. Synaptic package manager etc Regards Miykel

I got a red icon on the taskbar that tells me to run Package Manager. I ran Software Updater and got the following error:
