I would say the mirror was down, you are not the first reporting this. You can also change the Debian mirror if this one is too slow. This list should help you:http://www.debian.org/mirror/list.en.htmlhttp://http.debian.net/debian, this one, seems really to be a betch.
I'm having to deal with a Debian server, which initially was Squeeze, I believe, but where administrator enabled several distributions:
deb http://mirror.yandex.ru/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.yandex.ru/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.yandex.ru/debian/ unstable main contrib non-
Here you have it. Seems it is not the fault of the mirror in first place. It even talks about CrunchBang and other Debian derivatives prone to that error messages mainly. IMO I do not get it quite right. Using the classical mirrors here on Sid is never giving me that problem, maybe just switch to another international ftp mirror if you see that happening too often. In the debian installer, one is able to select a download mirror, and I noticed this wasn't in the Statler installer. I think this is a necessary choice, whether in the installer itself or in the firsttime script. My university (TEXAS FIGHT!) hosts a debian mirror, so I try to support/endorse it as much as possible haha.
