I have a disk, say /dev/sda.
Plugged my external hard drive into my laptop. I assume that I have to mount it before I can access my files?
Blockquote
sudo fdisk -l lists the drive, however, I cannot find it in the file explorer.

I had pretty much the same problem but it looked strange to me as the linux partition was installed in an extended one. Here is the ouput of fdisk -l :Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

my ubuntu desktop seems to be running very slow, I wonder if the swap is mounted correctly?

I'm running Kubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and Kubuntu hasn't recognised my CD!
