Free/Open Source software is great for Public Administrations, but Free/Open data are even more important. Making public sector information really accessible, that is publishing online raw data in open formats and under open licenses, can both improve transparency in government and foster local economical and cultural activities.

The Portuguese government agency for public procurement has published a list of open source applications it deems suitable for use by public administrations. The selected open source applications are now part of the official software catalogue published by Portugal’s procurement authority, the Agência Nacional de Compras Públicas, ANCP.

Netflix‘s lack of official support for Linux may not do much to help its popularity within the open source world.
