Gaming on Linux is getting more interesting by the day. Valve has updated its Steam December Survey to include Linux statistics. This is Valve’s first month with Linux and even though the Steam for Linux system is still in a beta stage, Linux users already account for 0.8% of total Steam users.
Back in July, Valve started a blog and gave exciting news of Steam being ported over to Linux. This involved porting of Valve’s Steam client and some game titles over to Ubuntu Linux. On making the port, it was seen that Left4Dead 2 runs faster on Linux at a higher FPS, than on Windows.
As things continue to heat up on the open source gaming front, Valve is preparing for a beta test of the Linux version of its popular Steam service, which Valve has promised to deliver by the end of this year. Many Linux gamers are watching this closely, especially after the popularity of Steam for the Mac.

Valve announced few days back that Steam for Linux beta testing will start in October. Since then, many new Linux games have been added to Steam database, including Team Fortress 2.
Now official Steam for Linux community group has been launched, indicating that Steam Linux Beta release is imminent.
After the launch of Steam Linux beta, you may have seen a big Tux logo on Steam client download page.
When visiting Steam download page from a web browser running on a Linux based OS, you are pointed to Linux version of Steam and a promo ad about Steam Linux beta is shown.

CroTeam has posted a status on Facebook confirming that Linux version of Serious Sam 3: BFE will be included with Portal and Team Fortress 2 in upcoming beta launch of Steam for Linux.
Its not clear if they meant public beta launch or the closed beta testing which will start soon for 1,000 lucky users.
In a new blog post, Valve has announced that they will be starting internal beta testing for Linux client next week.
There will be an external beta as well in October for about 1,000 users. They will be providing a sign-up page for users to apply for beta testing.
