The Apple live press event has started, and the first thing Tim Cook wanted to talk about was Apple Retail. He specifically mentioned the opening of a new store in Barcelona, noting that the new addition was one of Apple’s largest. And of course, “it’s absolutely gorgeous,” he said.
While the tech world has its sights set on the most talked about trial in tech history, Samsung just opened a new Samsung Experience store in Sydney, Australia.
Samsung’s being accused (by Apple) of being a copycat, but that is yet to be decided on by the jury. If there’s one way Samsung could, and should, copy Apple it would be in designing retail stores.

As if you haven’t noticed, some of Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) retail stores can get crowded, shoulder-to-shoulder in some locales and difficult to navigate during new product kickoffs. So Apple figures when it comes to its retail outlets, bigger isn’t just better, it’s also necessary, as it plans to shutter 20 retail stores and replace them with larger ones.
After launching its mobile payments service in Canada a few weeks ago, Square is expanding its presence in the country with new retail partnerships.
The company’s mobile card reader is now available in more than 250 retail stores in Canada, including Apple, Best Buy, and Futureshop locations.
HTC has, in a manner of speaking, opened a store in Hamburg, Germany. It’s not a stand alone store like a Microsoft or Apple store. It’s more of a store within a store with specially trained staff and displays. The layout is similar to the Apple section inside most Best Buy locations in the US.

On eBay’s earnings call this past week, CEO John Donahoe revealed that the company’s Square competitor, PayPal Here, had landed its first U.S. retail deal. PayPal Here is now being sold at 1,800 AT&T stores across the US.
Dick’s Sporting Goods, the largest sporting goods retailer in the U.S., now has an official app available on the Play Store. Apps from retail stores can sometimes be hit or miss, but Dick’s seems to have their act together here.
