Since kernel 3.3.x there are frequent kernel panics during the boot process. It seems to be a kernel problem since I downgraded to 3.0 and the problems are gone.
The kernel panics happen almost at every boot attempt. After 4 or 5 restarts the system boots normally. It also seems to affect only Sandy Bridge systems, and maybe Ivy Bridge too.
Last kernel I checked was 3.4.9 with the same results.
I'm fed up with the outdatedness of the Foresight iso (can't install it on my system because of the kernel), and I want to start my own distro.

I am currently running Ubuntu 12.10.
Both in 12.04, and 12.10, I have been noticing random Kernel Panics that seem to happen only when I am not using the laptop.
I went to follow the guide for getting the crash dump, but after a simulated crash (using sysreq c), /var/crash is empty.
I should have mentioned in my op that I am running Statler. I went ahead and updated from the 2.xx kernel to the 3.xx kernel. I then installed the atheros firmware and the athk9 installer and ran it. After a reboot my network was there. Im completely new to this distro and was under the impression that Statler is the stable release. Is that true or is waldorf the latest stable?
Hello,
I'm experiencing random kernel panics during Kubuntu 12.04 boot (by the way, 11.10 also had this problem). It seems to occur only when I turn on my laptop for the first time, as far as I remember the problem never manifested itself when I reboot (properly). But if the kernel panics, it can take quite a few reboots to finally boot the system.
