What am I missing? I change the root password on a unix machine, then try to log in with that password. PasswordAuthentication is set to yes in sshd_config and the sshd daemon has been restarted.
I just installed ubuntu on my netbook and am loving it!!
What I’m now trying to do is set up my root account.
I tried to run the following command at a command prompt:
su root
and use the password for the main account i set up during the install process. but that didn't work.
Currently they are the same with 2 of my dedicated server.
I wonder if I change my cpanel whm password, will the root ssh password change too?
The other way around, if I change the ssh password with password command, will whm password change too?
This thread http://forums.cpanel.net/f5/changing-whm-root-password-command-line-3457... seems to suggest that it's yes but somehow doesn't work for
Hello,
Here's my current situation. I have installed Backtrack 5 R1 (which is essentially Ubuntu 10.04 with lots of preloaded packages) onto a 16 GB flash drive, and everything words fine until I change the root password. I have the Gnome 64-bit edition.
The default root/toor combination works, and I'm able to load the desktop using startx.
I just installed Lubuntu as a user. It didn't ask me
anything during the install about root, or what root
password I would like. So now, when I need root to
change /etc/fstab or /etc/rc.local, I can't. When I
try to set up root admin in Users Accounts, it says
there already is a root. Nobody said nothing to ME
about setting up a root account.
As part of trying to implement a security measure in my root ssh session, I'm trying to devise a method of starting a script after n seconds of root user login, and change the user password and logout the user automatically.
I'm getting stuck at trying to change the password silently.
I am user xyz on redhat linux VM abc.
I cannot change password.
abc:/home/xyz>passwd
Changing password for user xyz.
Changing password for xyz
(current) UNIX password:
Password changes on the command line are not supported.
I'm logged into (ssh) my ubuntu server into a non-root user account. I can not directly ssh into the server as root, because I disabled it. I have the root password.
I am unable to change my password even in root (recovery mode), or to unlock it. I can still access my account, but without password protection.
