At the end of 2011, the Android OS had a 46.3% market share for smartphones, but now they are officially over the 50% mark according to Nielsen’s latest report for the 2nd quarter of this year. The Android OS continues to climb and of all smartphone users, 51.8% of them are running Android. The question that is always asked next is where’s Apple stand?
Android dominates the worldwide smartphone market, running on 75 percent of all smartphones shipped throughout the globe in the third quarter, IDC reported. Samsung continued to hold sway over the Android market, but its market share slipped because of competition from a multitude of smaller vendors. Apple's iOS came in a poor second, shipping on 26.9 million smartphones in Q3 2012.
According to research report, Android extended lead while Apple iOS market share remained stagnant. Samsung grows its market share too.

Well due to the fact that no other real competitor has stepped up to try and challenge Apple and Android, the two have benefited from the lack of competition in the tablet market. It was originally thought back in 2010 that both would lose market share in the tablet market due to outside competition.
The Android platform tops the list in sales of smartphone operating systems for the first quarter of 2011, according to a report by market researcher Gartner. Total smartphone sales accounted for 23.6 percent of global handset units overall, and various phones sporting Google's Android OS took 36 percent of that market. They sold more than 36.3 million units in the quarter.

comScore released smartphone manufacturer and operating system data today for the first quarter of 2013 in the U.S. market. The numbers show Android continuing to dominate with 52 percent market share for operating systems. This was down slightly from December 2012 when Android held 53.4 percent of the market.

Apple continued to win out in terms of tablet market share this past quarter, according to the latest figures from ABI Research, with a 55 percent share of all shipments during the period. That’s a lead it has had since 2010 when the iPad was introduced, but it’s also the slimmest lead it’s ever had, and represents a dip of 14 percent versus the previous quarter.
