You might have read that catalyst was removing support for any HD4xxx card or below. With support for xorg 1.12 coming in catalyst 12.6, the plan for Chakra was to finally update xorg, and drop support for these cards.Today though, it was announced, there is a first beta release for catalyst-legacy. It is packaged right away, to see how well it functions, so the move to xorg 1.12 can s
AMD has recently dropped support for cards in series HD 2xxx-4xxx. Catalyst drivers for these cards are now available in a different branch, called Legacy series. Legacy drivers won't receive any new feature updates from AMD.
Proprietary fglrx drivers for these legacy cards are not compatible with Quantal.
Latest proprietary AMD Catalyst driver version 12.9 cannot be used with Ubuntu 12.10 If you have a AMD Radeon HD 2xxx-4xxx series card.
Drivers for these cards are now available in a separate branch called legacy series. Unfortunately these legacy drivers (version 12.6) have not been updated to work with Ubuntu 12.10.

AMD Catalyst Legacy driver for Linux (compatible with series 2xxx-4xxx cards) has been updated to version 13.1.
This release features some fixes needed by Team Fortress 2 and other Linux games on Steam.
Unfortunately, this driver supports Ubuntu 12.04 LTS only which comes with xorg 1.12.
Hiya all,
I've recently installed a Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, but it currently doesn't have support from any open source drivers (including MESA's experimental DRI drivers). The only other option would be ATI's Catalyst drivers, but 9.12 doesn't support Xorg 7.5 at the moment (the drivers disable Xorg; leaving a terminal only setup).
AMD has just announced the release of its newest graphics card drivers for Linux. ATI Catalyst 10.4 brings a number of fixes and also gets initial support for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, due to be released later today. It’s available in package form for most of the popular commercial Linux distributions. The drivers are updated to version 8.723, in ATI Catalyst 10.4.
The instructions are for removing catalyst from the system and use the free drivers provided by xf86-video-ati.Since you replaced catalyst with catalyst-legacy, these don't apply to you.It is just the way pacman works. It is only possible to return messages when a pkg is either installed, upgraded or removed.

It got updated to the 12.9 beta (same as in catalyst-test) at the same time as Xorg got
