Amazon opens Australian office

Global cloud computing giant Salesforce.com has given Australian customers concerned about losing control of their data to other jurisdictions the first ray of hope in the past decade, confirming today it was evaluating the case for creating a local datacentre.

Amazon's Web Services cloud computing division is planning to open a new datacentre hosted in Australia next year, according to an article published in the Australian newspaper this morning.

The chief technology officer of global retailer and technology giant Amazon has scheduled in a trip to Australia in mid-July to spruik the company's cloud computing offerings, as interest in the burgeoning field of online cloud platforms continues to boom.

Switzerland-based cloud computing company, Nivio, has entered the Australian market offering small businesses access to Microsoft Office applications in the cloud, via any Java capable browser on a Windows, Mac or Linux PC.

Japanese computing giant Fujitsu has outlined its roadmap for global cloud computing – with Australia the first market outside Japan to trial the service.
